On 26 April 2026, Sabastian Kimaru Sawe ran 1:59:30 at the TCS London Marathon - making him the first man ever to break two hours in a World Athletics-sanctioned road race.

Eliud Kipchoge ran 1:59:40 at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in 2019, but that was a controlled time trial with rotating pacemakers on a closed loop. It didn't count as a world record. What Sawe did in London counts for everything.

The top 3 breakdown

Yomif Kejelcha crossed in **1:59:41**, also under the two-hour mark - meaning two men broke the barrier in the same race. Jacob Kiplimo was right behind them in **2:00:28**, the third-fastest marathon ever run.

Amos Kipruto placed 4th in 2:01:39, which on almost any other day in history would have been a headline itself. That's the depth of what happened in London.

Why this race changes the marathon conversation permanently

The two-hour marathon was the sport's equivalent of the four-minute mile - a barrier that defined a generation of runners. Once it falls, the psychological ceiling is gone. The next generation of athletes will train knowing sub-2 is achievable, not theoretical.
