The Best Places to Run on the Gold Coast (Local Routes for Training)

Flat Broadwater paths, Burleigh headland trails, and the Gold Coast Oceanway: the best running routes on the Gold Coast for marathon prep and holiday training.

· 7 min read · Race Spotlights

The Gold Coast looks like a runner's paradise on a map: long beaches, a flat Broadwater, and paved paths that stretch for kilometres. In practice, you still need to know which sections are continuous, where the shade disappears, and which routes match marathon-pace work versus recovery jogs.

These are the best places to run on the Gold Coast for locals and visitors, ranked for actual training value rather than Instagram appeal. If you are here for [Gold Coast Marathon 2026](/blog/gold-coast-marathon-2026-preview) weekend, use this list to keep your legs ticking without wasting energy on traffic lights and tourist crowds.

1. Broadwater Parklands loop (parkrun course)

![A runner jogging on a wide, flat paved path in Broadwater Parklands on the Gold Coast](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/broadwater-parklands-loop.png)

This is the flattest, most reliable 5K loop on the coast. **Gold Coast parkrun** uses the Broadwater Parklands shared path every Saturday at 7:00am, and the same route works any day of the week for easy runs or marathon-pace strides.

**The route:** Out-and-back along the Broadwater foreshore from Broadwater Parklands, Southport.

**Distance:** 5 km (extend by repeating loops or adding Marine Parade).

**Terrain:** Sealed path, completely flat.

**Runner's tip:** Sea breeze off the Broadwater keeps summer mornings cooler than inland suburbs. Arrive before 8:00am if you want empty paths. Find weekly events on the [parkrun directory](/parkruns/country/australia).

2. Quota Park to Broadwater Parklands (7 km)

![A continuous paved waterfront path running along the Gold Coast Broadwater near Biggera Waters](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/quota-park-path.png)

This north-side beachside segment runs perpendicular to the Gold Coast Highway through Harley Park, Len Fox Park, and Mitchell Park. It is one of the best continuous flat sections for tempo work when the ocean-side paths are windy.

**The route:** Quota Park near the mouth of Biggera Creek south to Broadwater Parklands.

**Distance:** About 7 km one way (14 km return).

**Terrain:** Paved shared paths through parkland.

**Runner's tip:** Pair this with a cooldown on the softer sand at Marine Parade if your calves need variety. Use the [pace calculator](/tools/pace-calculator) to lock in marathon-goal splits on a flat segment like this.

3. Gold Coast Oceanway: Burleigh to Broadbeach

![A scenic runner's view on the Gold Coast Oceanway near Miami Beach](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/oceanway-burleigh-broadbeach.png)

The Oceanway is a network of coastal shared paths. The Burleigh-to-Broadbeach section is the most popular continuous segment for longer runs, with ocean views and cafes along the way.

**The route:** Start at Burleigh Heads and follow the Oceanway north through Miami, Mermaid Beach, and Nobby Beach to Broadbeach.

**Distance:** Roughly 8-9 km one way (16-18 km return).

**Terrain:** Paved paths with a few road crossings.

**Runner's tip:** Weekday sunrises beat weekend crowds. This route mirrors part of the marathon's coastal feel without the full out-and-back distance.

4. Burleigh Head National Park (Ocean View circuit)

![A runner navigating a dirt trail and stone steps inside Burleigh Head National Park](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/burleigh-head-circuit.png)

When you need hills and variety without leaving the coast, the headland trails deliver. This is not marathon-pace territory. It is strength and form work.

**The route:** Ocean View Circuit from the Burleigh Headland entrance (1.3 km one way) or the Rainforest Circuit (2.3 km loop).

**Distance:** 2-5 km depending on loops.

**Terrain:** Dirt, stone steps, and short sharp climbs.

**Runner's tip:** Run this easy. The steps punish quads if you treat it like a interval session the week before a goal race.

5. The Spit to Main Beach (5.6 km)

![A flat paved path along The Spit on the Gold Coast](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/the-spit-path.png)

The northernmost Oceanway section runs from Hollingdale Park at Main Beach north to The Spit. Run south-to-north for a gentle net flow with Broadwater views on one side and high-rise skyline on the other.

**The route:** Hollingdale Park to The Spit jetty.

**Distance:** 5.6 km one way.

**Terrain:** Flat paved path.

**Runner's tip:** Excellent for marathon-pace blocks because it is flat, uninterrupted, and usually less crowded than Surfers Paradise.

**Map:** [Hollingdale Park, Main Beach](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Hollingdale+Park,+Main+Beach)

6. Hedges Avenue (flat speed strip)

![A runner doing speed work early in the morning along Hedges Avenue in Mermaid Beach](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/hedges-avenue-run.png)

Locals call this the "Millionaire's Row" run. It is a straight, flat avenue parallel to the beach between Mermaid Beach and Broadbeach, popular for tempo efforts.

**The route:** Any section of Hedges Avenue between Pacific Fair and Nobby Beach.

**Distance:** 2-4 km usable stretch (repeat as needed).

**Terrain:** Footpath and road shoulder; flat.

**Runner's tip:** Early morning only. Traffic and pedestrian traffic pick up after 8:00am. No shade, so plan hydration.

7. Southport Broadwater marathon finish zone

![A runner rehearsing on the wide paved path near the Southport Broadwater Parklands](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/southport-finish-zone.png)

If you are racing [Gold Coast Marathon 2026](/blog/gold-coast-marathon-2026-preview), rehearse the finish approach. The last kilometres run along the Broadwater toward Southport, and knowing the path reduces stress on race morning.

**The route:** Run the Broadwater path from Marine Parade toward the Southport finish precinct near the council chambers and parklands.

**Distance:** Flexible; 3-5 km for a shakeout.

**Terrain:** Flat sealed path.

**Runner's tip:** Do a easy 20-minute jog here two days before the marathon to visualise the finish chute.

**Map:** [Southport Broadwater](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Southport+Broadwater+Parklands)

8. Federation Walk, Main Beach (sand and path mix)

![A runner on a mixed dirt and paved path winding through coastal woodland in Federation Walk](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/federation-walk-path.png)

Federation Walk Conservation Reserve offers a quieter alternative to the busy Surfers Paradise strip, with paths through coastal woodland leading toward The Spit.

**The route:** Enter from Sea World Drive or Ferny Avenue side and loop through Federation Walk toward The Spit.

**Distance:** 4-8 km depending on loops.

**Terrain:** Mixed dirt and paved paths; some soft sand near the beach.

**Runner's tip:** Good for easy recovery days. Avoid deep sand within 10 days of a marathon unless you know your calves can handle it.

**Map:** [Federation Walk Conservation Reserve](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Federation+Walk+Conservation+Reserve)

9. Emerald Lakes (controlled loop)

![A peaceful 3km paved running loop around a calm central lake in the Emerald Lakes estate](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/emerald-lakes-loop.png)

Inland from the beaches, Emerald Lakes offers a quiet 3 km loop around the lake estate. Useful when coastal wind makes oceanfront running miserable.

**The route:** Circumnavigate the central lake via the shared paths inside the Emerald Lakes estate.

**Distance:** About 3 km per loop.

**Terrain:** Flat paved paths.

**Runner's tip:** Multiple loops make this a safe option for easy mileage when you want zero navigation stress.

10. Parkrun Broadbeach Waters (Saturday 5K)

![A group of runners on a flat paved path in Broadbeach Waters, Gold Coast](/blog-images/gold-coast-scenic-running-routes/broadbeach-waters-parkrun.png)

South of the main Broadwater parkrun, **Broadbeach Waters parkrun** starts at PCYC Monaco Street. Useful if you are staying closer to Burleigh or Broadbeach and want a weekly benchmark.

**The route:** Weekly 5K course from PCYC Broadbeach Waters (check [parkrun Australia](https://www.parkrun.com.au/) for course details).

**Distance:** 5 km.

**Terrain:** Flat paved paths.

**Runner's tip:** Treat parkrun as a controlled effort the week before a marathon, not an all-out race. Walkers are welcome at every parkrun event.

Training in Gold Coast humidity

Winter mornings (June-August) are the sweet spot for marathon build-ups. Humidity still matters, especially on windless days along the Broadwater. Run before 7:00am, carry water on anything over 10 km, and do hard sessions on flat paths rather than headland trails.
