Boston Marathon Qualifying Times 2026: Age Group Standards and Cutoff
Boston Marathon qualifying times for 2026 by age and gender, how the 4:34 cutoff worked for the 130th race, and what buffer you need for 2027 entry.

Running a **Boston Marathon qualifying time** (BQ) is one of running's most recognised benchmarks. For the 130th Boston Marathon in April 2026, the Boston Athletic Association tightened standards for runners under 60 and still required a **4 minute 34 second buffer** below the listed time to guarantee entry.
Meeting the standard on paper is not enough. The race is oversubscribed every year.
2026 Boston Marathon qualifying times
Times below are net (chip) times. Non-binary athletes use the women's standard.
| Age group | Men | Women / Non-binary | | --- | --- | --- | | 18-34 | 2:55:00 | 3:25:00 | | 35-39 | 3:00:00 | 3:30:00 | | 40-44 | 3:05:00 | 3:35:00 | | 45-49 | 3:15:00 | 3:45:00 | | 50-54 | 3:20:00 | 3:50:00 | | 55-59 | 3:30:00 | 4:00:00 | | 60-64 | 3:50:00 | 4:20:00 | | 65-69 | 4:05:00 | 4:35:00 | | 70-74 | 4:20:00 | 4:50:00 | | 75-79 | 4:35:00 | 5:05:00 | | 80+ | 4:50:00 | 5:20:00 |
Standards for ages 18-59 were tightened by five minutes compared with previous cycles, reflecting faster global marathon fields and sustained demand for Boston entries.
The cutoff: why BQ is not enough
For the 2026 race, applicants needed to be **4:34 or faster** than their age-group standard to be accepted. Of 33,249 qualifier applications, roughly 24,362 were accepted - meaning thousands who hit the listed standard still missed out.
Recent cutoffs have ranged from roughly 4 to 7+ minutes under standard depending on the year. A practical target for competitive entry is often **7 to 10 minutes under** your listed BQ time, not the minimum on the chart.
How to use these times in training
1. **Find your standard** from the table using your age on Boston Marathon race day. 2. **Estimate your current marathon fitness** with the [race predictor](/tools/race-predictor) from a recent half marathon or marathon. 3. **Set an interim goal** - most runners need one or two marathon cycles to move from "near BQ" to "BQ minus buffer."
Compare your marathon time against [average marathon time by age](/blog/average-marathon-time) and [good half marathon time benchmarks](/blog/good-half-marathon-time) to see whether you are building from a half-first path or chasing time directly over 42.2 km.
Course and certification notes
Qualifying marathons must be certified and on a course that meets Boston's standards. Courses with excessive net downhill can receive time adjustments. Always confirm your target race appears on the B.A.A. list of qualifying events before planning a BQ attempt.
Use the [half marathon pace chart](/blog/half-marathon-pace-chart) to calibrate intermediate checkpoints during a marathon build. A structured [marathon training plan](/plans/marathon) spreads the long-run progression that most BQ chasers need.
What changed for 2026
The five-minute tightening for under-60 age groups was the biggest shift. Runners who qualified under older, slower standards needed faster performances in the September 2024 to September 2025 qualifying window to remain competitive.
