The 130th Boston Marathon delivered one of the most extraordinary men's races in the event's history. On April 20, 2026, John Korir of Kenya crossed the Boylston Street finish line in **2:01:52** - obliterating the previous course record of 2:03:02 set by Geoffrey Mutai back in 2011.

That old record had stood for 15 years. It fell by more than a minute.

The top 3 breakdown

Alphonce Felix Simbu finished second in **2:02:47** and Benson Kipruto third in **2:02:50**. Both of those times are faster than the course record that had stood since Mutai's famous tailwind-aided run in 2011. Three men finished inside what used to be the course record - that's how fast this race was.

Korir became a two-time Boston champion, having also won in 2025. Defending a Boston title on that course, with its hills and unpredictable New England weather, is not a simple task. He ran with controlled aggression from the start and managed the Newton Hills better than anyone else in the field.

Key highlights

- John Korir's **2:01:52** is a new Boston Marathon course record - Simbu (2:02:47) and Kipruto (2:02:50) both ran faster than the previous course record - Three men finished under the old 2:03:02 mark in the same race - US runner Zouhair Talbi placed fifth in **2:03:45**, a strong showing for the American contingent - Charles Hicks (7th, 2:04:35) and Clayton Young (11th, 2:05:41) were the best of the rest from Team USA

Why this race matters

Boston is not a record-friendly course. The point-to-point layout from Hopkinton means times can't count as world records under World Athletics rules. The course has net downhill overall, but those Newton Hills in the second half are brutal - and the weather is famously unpredictable in April.

For Korir to run 2:01:52 on this course, in these conditions, shows just how much the marathon field has deepened at the top. The world record conversation is permanently accelerating. Sawe and Kejelcha would go on to break two hours in London six days later, but Korir's performance here was its own statement.

American men's marathon running also deserves recognition here. Having five US athletes in the top 13 on this course, including Talbi in 5th, is a genuine sign that the USA is building depth at the elite level.

What everyday runners can take from this

Boston's course teaches lessons that apply to any runner:

1. Respect the second half. The Newton Hills at km 26-30 break runners who go out too fast in the early miles. Even at the elite level, race strategy around those hills determines who's still running fast at Boylston. Before your next goal race, use our [Race Predictor](/tools/race-predictor) to set a realistic target based on your current fitness. 2. Train your downhills. Boston's net drop catches a lot of runners with quad damage by mile 20. If you're targeting a point-to-point race, add downhill repeats into your long run weeks. 3. Course records don't just fall - they get prepared for. Korir's build-up, his 2025 win, and his race execution all pointed toward a fast day.
